All orthodontists are dentists who then completed an accredited orthodontic residency (typically two to three years) after dental school. General dentists may also offer braces or aligners. See the American Association of Orthodontists.
When should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up no later than age 7. Most children don't need treatment that early; the visit is to spot problems that are easier to guide while the jaw is growing.
Does insurance cover braces?
Many dental plans include an orthodontic benefit with a lifetime maximum, often only for children. Medicaid covers medically necessary orthodontics for children under 21, but each state decides what counts as medically necessary. Ask the practice to check your benefits before you start.
